  1. I've really got a very BIG problem. I've posted this message to 
  2. newsnet too, but I'm desperate so I hope you don't mind this mail and 
  3. will have some time to take a look at this too.

  14. If anybody knows what's going on in my computer please help. I've had
  15. an Amiga for five years but this something I really can't understand.

  17. Two days ago my Workbench locked up when I activated an icon. The 
  18. mouse won't move anymore, the computer doesn't respond to the 
  19. keyboard, etc.
  20. It looks as if the system guru's, but when you reset there is no guru
  21. message.

  23. Describing the problem exactly:
  24. I double-click on icons, i.e. a disk icon or a drawer icon and after 
  25. a few icon-clicking-actions 0<x<20 (if I'm lucky) nothing happens 
  26. anymore.
  27. I can still move the mouse but when I click on a drawer for example 
  28. the drawer won't open(the drawer icon stays in the 'pressed' 
  29. position). 
  30. At this position the system semi-hangs. When I move the mouse to 
  31. something else (a depth-gadget a window-bar or something else 
  32. intuition like the screen really freezes(the workbench screen) and 
  33. nothing responds to any input at all.
  34.  
  35. Here is the frightening part:
  36. * Everything works well when I activate programms using tools-daemon, 
  37.   toolmanager or 'execute command' in the workbench menu. The shell 
  38.   works fine too.
  39. * All my programs run, Amos, Amiga-E, Ed, shell, dir, list, you name 
  40.   it. Even from the Workbench if the icon problem doesn't show up to 
  41.   fast.
  42. * The games I've got work as well, all of them.
  43. * When I empty my WB-startup-drawer and start wb completely 'naked' it 
  44.   still hangs after some time.
  45. * When I run a music tracker on a different screen the music will 
  46.   play on.
  47.   The screen output on this screen also continues, but I can't click  
  48.   in this screen(system hangs)

  50. Conclusion: The Workbench Software doesn't work, screen output on the 
  51. Workbench screen is locked and all input from keyboard is locked 
  52. either.
  53. When I insert a floppy-disk the computer will scan it. If the same 
  54. disk(icon) was already present on the workbench screen the drive-led 
  55. will go off after scanning, if it wasn't the drive led stays on.

  57. * My configuration is:
  58.   A500 rev 5. Kickstart 2.04. Workbench 2.1 1 meg CHIP, 2 meg FAST
  59.   GVP A500HD8 52 meg harddisk with a GVP AT286 hardware emulator,
  60.   processor 68010, 512kb chip intern, 512kb chipmemexpansion trapdoor.

  62.   I have stripped all the add-ons, Harddisk, AT286, 68010, fast-ram
  63.   512 kb chipram-extension, etc., doesn't help. I have started WB 
  64. 2.04 from floppy disk, no harddisk and still it doesn't work.
  65.   I've put the Kickstart 1.3 ROM back and started WB 1.3. Guess 
  66.   what:it also happens! (No add-ons at all)

  68. Conclusion: something is wrong with the hardware.

  70. As you can see, the experiments contradict each other. It can't be 
  71. the hardware, it can't be the software. Is it me? (It isn't me, when 
  72. someone else operates the computer it also happens :<<<  )

  75. My only conlusion from these conclusions can be:

  77. A virus
  78. B corrupt memory
  79.  
  80. (B can't be true because I've run a mem-checker three times.)

  82. Has anybody had the same problem?, knows what it could be, has a 
  83. suggestion where to look at?
